Coral Decay #2

A Fossilized Warning Cast in Eternal Materials

Coral Decay #2 is part of John Brevard’s Decay of Time collection—a series of functional sculptures that confront the fragility of our ecosystems while honoring the endurance of natural form. Each piece is entirely handmade and hand-polished, ensuring no two are ever alike.

To create this work, Brevard traveled the globe collecting coral that had washed ashore—displaced by climate change and ocean acidification. The coral was pressed into earth clay to form a mold. Recycled zinc was then poured into the cast, burning the coral out as the metal cooled—leaving behind a haunting void, like a fossil etched into molten memory.

The raw zinc structure is paired with hand-cut, hand-polished petrified wood—formed from trees turned to stone over hundreds of millions of years. Harder than steel, this material is sustainably extracted by hand from rainforests in Indonesia. Brevard and his team locate emerging fragments, then excavate them with care—never using heavy machinery, and often working for weeks to retrieve a single slab.

Once retrieved, each slab is refined with diamond saws and polishing tools. One small piece of petrified wood can take months to process—resulting in a smooth, organic surface with naturally unique grains ranging from ivory to deep brown.

Zinc, too, is sacred in its sustainability: an essential micronutrient for life and an endlessly recyclable element. It provides exceptional structural integrity and corrosion resistance. Each piece is finished with a thin layer of resin to seal the surface and offer comfort to the touch.
