Coral Decay #4
Coral Decay #4
A Fossil of Time, Cast in Metal and Memory
Coral Decay #4 is a meditation on impermanence. Part of John Brevard’s Decay of Time series, this functional sculpture captures the delicate erosion of our natural world—transformed into a powerful architectural design object.
Each piece begins with coral collected from shores around the world—displaced by rising oceans and climate shifts. Rather than letting these remnants disappear, Brevard preserves their intricate beauty through a lost-form casting process. Recycled zinc is poured into molds holding the coral, which is burned away, leaving behind a haunting, exact imprint. Like a fossil. Like a memory. Set in metal.
To counterbalance the raw, elemental zinc, Brevard inlays smooth slabs of petrified wood—polished by hand to a soft sheen. The result is a striking contrast of textures: erosion and permanence, light and weight, time and stillness.
Each sculpture is handmade and entirely unique—an object of purpose and reflection.
